“Amazing results! My dog, Lily, is an exceptionally well-trained dog.”

- Lindsey D.

"We adopted our two-year-old puppy about six months ago, and while she’s an amazing dog, she definitely is high-energy and needed some structure. Working with Rob has been a game changer! Lily has learned so much and the difference in our day-to-day life is incredible. She’s more focused, calmer, and so much easier to communicate with. We still have group classes ahead of us, and we’re excited to continue building on the progress she’s already made. Trainers at NSTA are patient, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do - so thanks to Rob and the whole team at North Star TA — highly recommend!"

What Can Service Dogs Do?

Perform Tasks

Service dogs empower individuals with disabilities by mastering specialized tasks that enhance daily independence and quality of life. With their exceptional training, they can open doors, toggle lights, provide balance and stability support, guide navigation, pull wheelchairs, answer or make phone calls, locate objects or destinations, load and unload items, clear rooms for safety, summon help, and much more. At Blue Star Training Academy, we focus on these transformative abilities to foster greater autonomy and confidence for both you and your canine partner.

Alert Handlers

Service dogs trained for medical alerts provide invaluable support to individuals with specific health conditions, acting as vigilant partners in preventing crises. Leveraging their extraordinary sense of smell, these dogs detect subtle chemical shifts signaling imminent seizures, blood sugar fluctuations, or rising blood pressure, promptly alerting their handlers to take action and avert emergencies. They also assist those with severe allergies by identifying potential allergens in food or environments. At Blue Star Training Academy, our positive reinforcement methods ensure these alert dogs are reliable, responsive, and deeply bonded with you, enhancing safety and independence every day.

Assist in Emergency

Service dogs play a crucial role in safeguarding individuals with disabilities or conditions like epilepsy, who may face heightened risks of medical emergencies. Through specialized training, these dedicated companions alert their handlers to impending issues, notify nearby people during an active crisis, and even activate pre-programmed phones to summon help swiftly. At Blue Star Training Academy, we emphasize these life-saving skills in our positive reinforcement programs, ensuring your service dog becomes a proactive guardian that promotes safety, peace of mind, and greater independence in everyday situations.

Service Dogs for Anxiety, PTSD, and Autism

Service dogs for handlers with severe anxiety or depression perform tasks like deep-pressure therapy, tactile stimulation, alerting, room clearing, and blocking strangers to prevent panic attacks or self-harm. Those trained for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have transformed many veterans' lives.

Service dogs also enhance the well-being of children with autism, who may experience meltdowns, communication challenges, or wandering. These dogs intervene to improve quality of life for the child and family.

Since autism is a spectrum, needs vary. Key tasks include:

  • Tracking: If a child wanders off, the dog tracks them to ensure quick recovery.
  • Tethering: In public, the child connects to the dog's harness, reducing wandering risks.
  • Behavior Interruption: The dog detects repetitive behaviors or overstimulation, using a nudge or paw to redirect attention and avert meltdowns.

At Blue Star Training Academy, our positive methods train these vital psychiatric service dogs for lasting support.

Common Questions About Service Dog Training

Still have questions about service dog training? We’ve got you covered! Below are some frequently asked questions that might help clarify any remaining concerns you have. At Blue Star Training Academy, we're here to ensure you and your dog have the best training experience possible.

What age can a dog start service dog training?

Dogs can begin basic obedience training as early as 8 weeks old, right when you bring them home. At this young age, puppies are like sponges, eagerly absorbing simple cues like "sit," "stay," and "come" through positive reinforcement. We recommend starting with foundational skills, socialization, and potty training immediately to build good habits and prevent issues later. For more structured obedience sessions, 12-16 weeks is ideal, as puppies gain better focus and stamina.

At Blue Star Training Academy, our puppy and obedience programs are designed to start your dog off right, using humane, reward-based methods. Whether in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, or Buenos Aires, contact us to enroll and set your pup up for success!

What issues will service training address

Service dog training at Blue Star Training Academy addresses a wide range of physical, medical, and psychiatric issues to enhance independence and quality of life. Our programs equip dogs to assist with disabilities such as mobility challenges, vision or hearing impairments, seizures, diabetes, severe allergies, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and autism spectrum disorders. Through specialized tasks like alerting to medical episodes, providing deep-pressure therapy, guiding navigation, retrieving items, or interrupting harmful behaviors, these dogs mitigate daily obstacles and promote safety and emotional well-being.

Whether supporting veterans with PTSD, children with autism, or individuals with chronic conditions, our positive reinforcement approach ensures tailored, effective solutions. Available in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Buenos Aires, contact us today to discuss how we can address your specific needs and start training!

How long does service dog training typically take?

The duration of service dog training varies based on the dog's age, breed, temperament, and the specific tasks required, but most programs at Blue Star Training Academy span 6 to 24 months for full certification. We start with foundational obedience and socialization (2-4 months), progress to task-specific training (4-12 months), and conclude with public access and handler integration (additional 2-6 months). Puppies often take longer to mature, while adult dogs with prior basics may accelerate the process.

Our customized, positive reinforcement approach ensures efficient progress without rushing. Available in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Buenos Aires, we track milestones closely for optimal results. Ready to begin? Reach out for a free consultation and timeline tailored to your needs!

Cairo

3 years old

I had an outstanding experience training my dog Cairo with Craig at Blue Star Training Academy. Cairo is a energetic puppy full of personality (and a bit of drama!). Training such a strong-willed pup can be challenging, but Rob’s patience, expertise, and positive approach made all the difference. He provided the guidance, resources, and tailored strategies needed to build solid obedience and prepare Cairo for the service dog public access test. Rob turns every session into a fun, rewarding process while helping us overcome breed-specific barriers with confidence. Highly recommend!

Rocky

4 years old

I can’t say enough good things about Blue Star Training Academy! My dog used to eat everything she could find on the ground, and I was constantly worried about her safety. The team not only helped her stop scavenging random items but also taught her to stay calm, focused, and well-behaved in public. Now she walks perfectly beside me, no pulling, no distractions, just confidence and control. I’m so grateful for the patience, expertise, and genuine care that went into her training. It truly feels like I have a whole new dog. Highly recommend Blue Star Training Academy to anyone in need, it’s worth every moment! 🐾

Eppy

2 years old

Our female Corgi started training with Craig at Blue Star Training Academy when she was about 5-6 months old. Now just over a year, she’s become an absolutely excellent pup! We needed a few in-home sessions, and she took to the training almost immediately. She’s still a little reactive in certain situations, but everything is now well under control and manageable.

Having had plenty of dogs before, this was our first with high drive and energy like hers, she wants to work and please so much, but really needed professional guidance to channel it properly. We’re so glad we started with expert help early on. Highly recommend Blue Star Training Academy!
